Menopause

Menopause is the medical term used for the end of a woman's menstrual periods. It occurs when levels of the female hormones oestrogen and progesterone drop and the body stops producing eggs. Menopause usually happens between the ages of 45 and 60, but in a small percentage of women, it can begin as early as 35.

Menopause can also occur when the ovaries are surgically removed or stop functioning for any other reason. Women who have undergone or are undergoing menopause can be at a higher risk of osteoporosis (brittle bones) and heart disease.

What are the symptoms?
The most common symptoms are hot flashes and intense waves of heat and sweating. Some women find that their sleep is disrupted during menopause, and others report mood changes. Other symptoms include irregular periods, vaginal or urinary tract infections and inflammation of the vagina. Some women may have discomfort or pain during sexual intercourse.
